MetaMeta activities at the UN Water Conference

Water is a dealmaker for the Sustainable Development Goals, and for the health and prosperity of people and planet. But our progress on water related goals and targets remains alarmingly off track, jeopardizing the entire sustainable development agenda. The UN 2023 Water Conference, co-hosted by the Governments of Tajikistan and the Netherlands, will unite the world for water and lead to new commitments, pledges and actions by governments and all stakeholders towards achieving SDG 6 and other water-related goals and targets.
MetaMeta is co-organising and involved in several side and special side events of the UN Water Conference and the New York Water Week.
Water and Heritage: Connecting Past, Present and Future - 20th March, 9:30 AM (EST) – New York
The side event called “Water and Heritage: Connecting Past, Present and Future” brings together a diverse and interdisciplinary group to discuss concepts, methodologies, and case studies. MetaMeta contributes to this side event with a presentation on spate irrigation and how this is fit for the future.

Supporting Self-supply - 23rd March, 09.00 AM (EST) – Online
This virtual side event, organised by MetaMeta, SMART Centre Group and others, informs about the huge impact of self-supply in Asia and shares experience how supported self-supply can reach SDG6.1 and increases food security in rural Africa at a 1 time grant of $25 per person. The event brings together stakeholders from the private sector, NGO sector and Academia to share experiences.

The Economics of Water: transforming governance to secure a sustainable, just and prosperous future - 23rd March, 15.00 PM (EST) – New York
This special event at the UN Water Conference is co-organised by MetaMeta. This open dialogue is an opportunity to discuss the criticality of the Water Action Agenda; highlight the need for the global water cycle to be managed as a global common good and safeguarded through effective multilateralism; and illustrate the governance conditions that are needed for a more efficient, just and sustainable use of water from the local to the global level to achieve water security.

A generational challenge in agriculture: Addressing the complexity of the water-food-energy-ecosystem nexus in the MENA-region - 24th March, 14:00 PM (EST) – New York
This side event of the UN Water Conference, co-organised by MetaMeta, encourages participants to break out of their silo, come together to explore and address the water-energy-food-ecosystem nexus jointly, by a case study on trends in water use and food production in the MENA region.
