Update Newarbi Project, Pakistan

31-01-2025

Seven years ago chickpeas were introduced in the extensive spate irrigation system in Balochistan, where it is now the second most important crop, grown on ten thousands of hectares. Chick peas is particularly suitable because its root can chase the moisture in the flood based fields. The introduction of the chick peas was the spectacular outcome of an exchange visit between farmers of Punjab and Balochistan  and subsequent mentoring by phone/ Whatsapp - see also the blog. Now chickpea has been introduced again through an exchange visit now between farmers from Balochistan and Sindh. The first response is very good, with also the chick peas used as vegetable.
