In Pakistan's Kacchi Plains, the NEWARBI project has successfully revitalized the world's largest farmer-managed irrigation system. This system, spanning over 180,000 hectares, utilizes short-term floods and temporary flows from ephemeral streams and the Nari River.
The Sounwah Dam, a crucial 15 km long earthen guide bund, had suffered severe breaches, leading to abandoned villages and halted cultivation. However, the project repaired 800 meters of the bund and restored 6,500 meters of flood channels in 2021. Despite challenges from Pakistan's mega-flood in 2022, the area remains resilient, with 15,000 hectares cultivated and communities restored.
