Green Road for Water in Rwanda
Under the Green Roads for Water Initiative (GR4W), MetaMeta recently conducted a scoping study and provided a comprehensive portfolio of measures for building GR4W in the Sebeya catchment area, Rwanda. The Sebeya catchment currently experience extreme soil erosion, and downstream flooding due to deforestation, mining exploitation, unsustainable agricultural practices and poorly designed road network in combination with heavy rainfall. The scope of this study was to assess the contribution of roads to landscape degradation and the potential of using roads as instruments for beneficial water management and climate resilience. The overall objective of this study was to provide an additional support measure to IWRM and reduce the landscape degradation in the catchment. Based on the finding of this study, GR4W interventions could contribute to addressing the above issues. The recommended GR4W measures for Sebeya catchment focus on three main purposes: (1) maintaining hydrological connectivity across the landscape, (2) reducing land degradation around roads, and (3) ensuring roads’ sustainability.
