Productive Biodiversity Updates: EBRM in India's Tribal Belt

14-05-2025

As part of the Productive Biodiversity project, funded by Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), we’re rolling out 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗥𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗘𝗕𝗥𝗠) in India’s tribal belt. This week, teams are in the field mapping rodent burrows across farmlands and household surroundings during the summer lean season: an ideal window when rodent populations are naturally low.

This burrow mapping campaign is more than a survey. It’s the groundwork for targeted interventions, like fumigation and flooding, carried out with full community participation. After initial burrow coverage, those that reopened were marked as active and then safely treated.

This approach reduces immediate rodent pressure and helps prevent population spikes during the monsoon. It also builds lasting awareness and leadership within the community: key to making EBRM work.

EBRM is one of three pillars in this project, alongside nature-based pest control and biodiversity management through hedges. Together, these efforts aim to reverse unsustainable agricultural practices and build food security from the ground up.
